What are some high-value applications of calcium carbonate? Let's take a look!

Guangxi Longhua calcium carbonate, as a superior filler, has advantages such as whiteness, purity, easy coloring, stable chemical properties, low cost, and controllable particle size and shape. It has been successfully applied in rubber, plastics, coatings, inks, and papermaking. However, in these traditional applications, the added value of calcium carbonate products is not high, and enterprises often rely on "quantity to win" for profit. The demand for functional products such as nano-calcium or high-purity calcium carbonate still relies on imports.

Guangxi Longhua Calcium carbonate, as an excellent filler, has advantages such as whiteness, purity, easy coloring, stable chemical properties, low cost, and controllable particle size and shape. It has been successfully applied in rubber, plastics, coatings, inks, and papermaking. However, in these traditional applications, the added value of calcium carbonate products is not high, and enterprises often rely on "quantity to win." The demand for functional products such as nano-calcium carbonate or high-purity calcium carbonate still relies on imports.

Currently, China's deep processing of mineral products is not high, and the added value of mineral products is low, with a large gap compared with developed countries. The calcium carbonate industry chain is short, lacking the ability to extend the downstream application industry chain. There are few high-end calcium carbonate products, and most calcium carbonate products are primary products, mainly low-end ordinary heavy calcium products, with low technology content and low added value. Technological transformation and integration improvement are urgently needed. The refinement and functionalization level of heavy calcium products is not high. Heavy calcium products account for 50% in 200-325 mesh, 35% in 325-1250 mesh, and 15% in 1250 mesh and above, of which only about 12% are modified.

Overall, the product and technology levels that meet the high-value application of calcium carbonate in China urgently need to be strengthened. With market development and regulation, high value-added calcium carbonate and specialized calcium carbonate applications will become new trends in the future market.

1、 Guangxi Longhua Food-grade calcium carbonate

Guangxi Longhua Food-grade calcium carbonate is a high-purity, high-whiteness powder material, and its calcium carbonate purity generally reaches more than 99%.

In terms of ore raw materials, the ore used to produce food-grade calcium carbonate must be high-quality, high-content pure natural ore. No pollution or impurities are allowed during processing, and the packaging process must ensure cleanliness and no pollution.

In the food industry, calcium carbonate can be used as an alkaline agent, nutritional supplement, dough conditioner, solidifying agent, yeast nutrient, anti-caking agent, loosening agent, gum base aid, and modifier, etc. It can also be added to calcium-enriched health foods, gum bases, leavening agents, noodles, cereals, biscuits, dairy products, soft capsules, etc. It can also be used as an abrasive in toothpaste, and the amount of abrasive in toothpaste is generally 25%~60%.

2、 Guangxi Longhua Nano calcium carbonate can effectively reduce the cost of degradable plastics. Taking plastic film as an example, the unique properties of nano calcium carbonate allow it to be uniformly filled in large proportions in agricultural film. When the product is formed and undergoes secondary stretching, countless tiny gaps are formed on the surface and inside, helping and accelerating the degradation of the film by light or biological agents. The resulting film ensures quality and practicality without increasing costs and allows for rapid degradation later.

Research and testing have found that from 0% to 50% calcium carbonate content, the tensile properties of the calcium carbonate and PBAT blend plastics first increase and then decrease. When coupling agent KH560 and plasticizer ADR are added, the tensile properties of PBAT and calcium carbonate blend plastics with 50% calcium carbonate content are significantly improved. When the content of coupling agent is 2% and the content of plasticizer is 1%, the tensile properties of the blend plastics reach their peak.

  4、Conductive coatings

Guangxi Longhua Lightweight calcium carbonate, due to its low cost and wide range of raw materials, is widely used as a filler in polymer materials such as rubber, plastics, and coatings. However, calcium carbonate is not conductive and cannot solve the problem of static electricity. By using calcium carbonate as a coating matrix to prepare CaCO3-polyaniline (PANI)/SiO2 conductive composite powder and applying it to the field of conductive coatings, it reduces the cost of coatings, improves the mechanical strength of the coating film, and also gives the coating film certain conductivity and anti-static properties, eliminating the hazards of static electricity. Among them, SiO2 coating modification can significantly improve the acid resistance of calcium carbonate.

In addition, American researchers have used calcium carbonate as a filler to prepare cooling coatings that can insulate most of the heat. In principle, calcium carbonate has a large band gap, which helps reduce the amount of ultraviolet light absorbed by the coating.

  5、Calcium carbonate for ink

Guangxi Longhua The application of calcium carbonate in coatings and inks can make the paint film clear and durable, and the ink printing color tone elegant and uniform. The good translucency, gloss, and fluidity of calcium carbonate can also reduce the cost of coatings and inks.

Especially after the widespread use of resin binders in inks, active calcium carbonate, with its excellent stability, has almost replaced other fillers. However, it must be activated, and the crystal form is spherical or cubic.

Currently, Japan sells more Baiyanghua O and DD in China. They are used in inks to improve their fluidity, transparency, and gloss. Baiyanghua O is a nano-calcium carbonate with better transparency, and Baiyanghua DD is a semi-transparent nano-calcium carbonate.

6、Calcium carbonate for sealants and adhesives

Nano calcium carbonate used in sealants and adhesives has good particle size stability and uniform dispersion, providing the sealant with good elasticity, waterproofness, airtightness, and rheology, making it an ideal sealing material.

The factors affecting the mixing performance of nano calcium carbonate for sealants in sealants are mainly: particle size, crystal form, oil absorption, specific surface area, pH value, sieve residue, and moisture content. Among them, the factors affecting the thixotropy of the colloid are mainly particle morphology, oil absorption, surface modification, and pH value, and the factors affecting the strengthening effect are mainly particle size and dispersibility.

Currently, domestic adhesives are mainly used in the construction, packaging, and timber industries, accounting for more than 50% in total. In the future, the demand for adhesives in mid-range applications such as automobiles, energy, and electronic information, as well as high-end applications such as aerospace, shipbuilding, and semiconductors, will grow rapidly, and the application share is expected to reach 40%.

  7、High-end plastics using calcium carbonate

High-end plastic filling has certain requirements for the calcium carbonate used as a filler. ① Good chemical stability: Calcium carbonate cannot have harmful reactions with resins and various additives. In other words, the calcium carbonate used in plastics and its surface organic treatment agents cannot participate in various chemical reactions. ② Good temperature resistance: Since the molding and processing of plastic products are carried out in a high-temperature environment (generally greater than 180℃), it is required that the calcium carbonate should not decompose or discolor under the temperature conditions of heating and molding. ③ Superior processability: This mainly includes several indicators: good dispersibility, good hydrophobicity, low oil absorption, and low migration.

From the perspective of industry and product development trends, "quality" and "application" are the two core keywords of the high-quality calcium carbonate industry. Only by achieving high-quality and high-grade development of the calcium carbonate industry, enabling products and industries to have the ability to strongly support the development of downstream industries, can the calcium carbonate industry achieve sustainable development.

Why is edible calcium carbonate added to toothpaste?

One of the core functions of toothpaste is to clean plaque and stains through abrasives, and edible calcium carbonate, due to its unique physical and chemical properties, has become a widely used choice in the industry. This additive not only needs to meet cleaning needs but also needs to comply with food safety standards. The logic behind it involves multiple considerations of material science, production processes, and consumer safety. Safety: From "edible" to "oral friendly" The "food-grade" attribute of edible calcium carbonate is a prerequisite for its use in toothpaste. According to national standards (such as GB 25584-2010), if toothpaste raw materials claim to be "edible", they must pass strict tests for heavy metals, microorganisms, etc., to ensure safety in case of accidental ingestion. Calcium carbonate itself is chemically stable and can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and calcium ions by gastric acid in the gastrointestinal tract, further reducing the risk. In contrast, industrial-grade calcium carbonate may contain trace amounts of heavy metals or impurities. Although the cleaning effect is similar, there are health risks associated with long-term use. Therefore, the choice of edible calcium carbonate in toothpaste is essentially a double protection against accidental ingestion by consumers. Functionality: Balancing cleaning power and mildness As an abrasive, the hardness and particle size distribution of calcium carbonate directly affect the cleaning effect. Its Mohs hardness is about 3, lower than that of tooth enamel (about 5), which can effectively remove
